Refugio's Story

Drug Delivery Therapy

IDD_Patients_refugio

Refugio could not have imagined the long-term effects of a split-second decision to carry a heavy box at work. As she lifted the box, something in Refugio’s back snapped. Suddenly she could not move. At the hospital, Refugio was given prescription pain medications and injections, but the intense pain continued.

Coping with chronic pain

Back at home, Refugio spent most of her time in bed. Prescription medications barely relieved the pain and made her drowsy. She could not even take care of herself. Unable to work and in constant pain, she became depressed. “My life felt shattered,” says Refugio.

For a time, Refugio’s doctor administered injections to block the pain. She received the treatments monthly, with moderate results.

Discovering drug delivery therapy

After ten years of living with unrelenting pain, Refugio heard about another option from her doctor. He recommended Refugio try drug delivery therapy from Medtronic.

Initially, Refugio was apprehensive about the therapy because she did not know how her body would react. Fortunately, patients can try drug delivery therapy before committing to long-term therapy. During the screening test, Refugio experienced relief from her pain.

Six months later, with the support of her family, Refugio went forward with the procedure. Her life soon began to change. As she became more active, she used a walker to get around. Over time Refugio was able to walk unassisted. In addition, her monthly injections for blocking pain were extended to once every four to six months.

While she had no complications, there are risks associated with the procedure. The most frequently reported problems following drug infusion system implant surgery include infection, spinal fluid leak, pump inversion, skin erosion, drug side effects, loss of therapy effect, and therapy that did not meet the patient’s expectations. Living a full life with drug delivery therapy

Refugio is back to enjoying life. She spends time with her family and is especially happy to be able to visit with her grandchildren. She completes chores and can go for car rides.

“My life has changed completely,” Refugio says. “Drug delivery therapy was the best choice for me.”
