Ramiro's Story
Drug Delivery Therapy

While at work one afternoon, as Ramiro tried to grab a piece of falling metal, he severely cut his finger. As he tended to the gash, he felt the pain spread across his hand and throughout his arm.
Ramiro had cut nerves, an injury that surgery could not repair.
“My life became a nightmare,” Ramiro recalls. He could no longer work or participate in the activities he most enjoyed. “Even sleeping was painful.”
Coping with chronic pain
Medication did not diminish Ramiro’s intense pain. His doctor recommended he try neurostimulation therapy. Ramiro felt some relief with neurostimulation, but the pain remained. His doctor then suggested he try drug delivery therapy from Medtronic.
Discovering drug delivery therapy
Within days of beginning drug delivery therapy, Ramiro was able to do basic chores around the house. “Three weeks later I felt completely recovered,” says Ramiro. “The pump is a very small device and does not bother me at all.”
While he had no complications, there are risks associated with the procedure. The most frequently reported problems following drug infusion system implant surgery include infection, spinal fluid leak, pump inversion, skin erosion, drug side effects, loss of therapy effect, and therapy that did not meet the patient’s expectations.
